THE CHALLENGE
DOT audits are a regular event in this industry. Because you as a trucking company are self-regulated, DOT has to check on you. There are various tools they use to determine who to check on more often.

The safety audit is a mandatory thing that will happen within the first 12 months of an interstate DOT number going active. They will check some minimum things to make sure you're following the basic rules.

The investigation is something that happens most often because of a triggering event. Those can be a fatal crash, poor scores from roadside inspections or a complaint from someone that DOT finds is reasonable. Investigations are not safety audits. In these, DOT is looking for problems. And the fines can be outrageous. Not having a pre-employment drug test result on a driver before they drive, for example, can be fined at well over $4,000 EACH!!!!
